Stop the Tower
A Tower for Wall Street, Paid for With Our Parkland
Bergen County is on the verge of committing one of the worst betrayals of public trust in its history. Officials are advancing a plan to construct a 500-foot private communications tower in the heart of the Ramapo Reservation — a park preserved with taxpayer dollars and protected under the Public Trust Doctrine.
This isn’t about improving cell coverage or emergency communications. That claim is simply false. The tower would serve one purpose: to give McKay Brothers, a private high-frequency trading firm, a faster path to move stock-trading data between Wall Street and Canada. The goal is to shave microseconds off financial trades — a scheme that benefits speculators, not the public.
Why should our parkland be sacrificed so hedge funds can make faster bets?
This tower would industrialize a protected forest, violate Green Acres rules, and permanently scar one of the most beautiful ridges in northern New Jersey. It sets a dangerous precedent: if we allow the destruction of protected public land for private profit here, then no park in New Jersey is safe.
The Ramapo Reservation exists because generations fought to preserve it. Now Bergen County is prepared to sell out that legacy for Wall Street greed.
